There was an optimal set of conquest gear for each spec for most PvP situations. If they could implement a system similar to GW2, a standardized template like Legion except you get to tweak your template to fit your preferred build/playstyle, that would be perfect IMO. For me this was the only issue with the template system. Building and customizing a character is like the cornerstone of the RPG genre, removing part of that customization is never a good thing. Blizzard literally told you what stats your spec would have in PvP, and you had zero say over it. That control was completely gone with the actual templates of Legion.
Sure there was limited options for each slot, but you did have some say over how your character’s stats were built.
In WoD, or any of the previous expansions, that had two tiers of gear that was reliable to get you still could control which pieces you bought. But it is different than actual templates, in one important way. I see where you’re coming from that in practice it feels pretty much the same.
